## Summary

New research suggests social media may undermine how the brain works in a different way than commonly assumed, despite its frequent blame for growing division. Cited figures show that in 2022 nearly half of Americans expected a civil war within a few years, and one in five now believes political violence is justified, with people around the world increasingly seeing themselves as part of opposing teams. Social media is often blamed for dividing people, fueling extremism and lower empathy, and causing stress and depression through doom scrolling. The research findings themselves are not described.
