## Summary

Farcaster channels that function as onchain communities are distinct from ordinary hashtag-style channels, and the author argues that many channels with potential have not yet become true communities because building one takes considerable work. The author cites 12,692 active channels on Farcaster, of which 3,835 are popular, with the most-followed channels having 387,034 followers. Examples given include /kiwi-news, described as a decentralized Hacker News and a 495-member group chat, and /itookaphoto, a photo-sharing channel actively curated by @incept.eth where members earn rewards. The author notes that tools such as @automod, @rounds and @hypersub exist, but transforming channels into a frictionless onchain community experience is still hard.

Community is all you need (2)

Farcaster Channels are onchain communities

There are 12,692 active farcaster channels on @farcaster
3,835 of them are popular.
Most followed channels have 387,034 followers.

Some of them feels not more than a hashtag, best of them are onchain communities:

/kiwi-news is a decentralized hacker news, and a 495 member group chat where we discuss cryptography, decentralized media, and poppyseed ice creams;

/itookaphoto and its series, actively curated by @incept.eth is where we share photos, videos and earn rewards.

/clubted is a community made me wish I'm in LA so I can join all the URL-IRL meet ups;

Difference b/w x and @farcaster, are the communities I find here.

However, many channels that have great potential to be more community-like, are not there yet, why is that?

Building a community takes lots of work. Even w/ tooling like @automod , @rounds , & @hypersub, it is still hard to transform channels into a frictionless onchain community experience.
