In a reply on Monday, X owner Elon Musk said the "block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public post." Currently, X shows a "You're blocked" message when a blocked user tries to view the profile of the person who blocked them, and it hides their posts, replies, media, followers, and following list. A source at X told The Verge that the change is being made because people can already view posts from blocked users through another account or while logged out, though Verge staff said they found that X blocks profile viewing for logged-out users. ## Article X will now make your posts visible to users you’ve blocked. In a reply on Monday, X owner Elon Musk said the “block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public post.” Currently, X displays a “You’re blocked” message when trying to view the profile of a person who’s blocked you. In addition to blocking all posts, it also prevents you from seeing their replies, media, followers, and following list. While a source at X told The Verge that the platform is making this change because people can already view posts from users who’ve blocked them when using another account or when logged out, several of us at The Verge (myself included) have noticed that X actually prevents you from viewing someone’s profile if you’re logged out. Musk has been vocal about his dislike of the block button. Last year, he said the feature “makes no sense” and that “it needs to be deprecated in favor of a stronger form of mute.” He also threatened to stop letting users block people on the platform completely, except for direct messages. Even though X’s block button will continue to prevent someone from interacting with a person’s posts, they’ll still be able to see them, potentially making it easier for bad actors to continue harassing their victims. The alternative was that a hater would potentially create a new account to see the post, so that disincentivizes them. **misha**: According to some discussion I read on X: > It’s a violation of both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store ToS to have a social app without a block feature. https://x.com/adamscochran/status/1838562082200940730 **tim**: Warpcast also doesn‘t have blocking and they are fine **naomiii.eth**: I think there was quite a bit of discourse in the women group chats about the lack of blocking on warpcast. For now we don't have the amount of creeps other platforms have (this is how we know we're nowhere near mass adoption) - but the ability to block someone is kinda useful when you've experienced your fair share of harassment before. I mean them still seeing stuff, probably as mentioned no way to stop them anyway - but I think for messaging etc there definitely should be an ability to block someone. Also for channels - some sexist dude constantly posting in a channel for FarcastHers doesn't really help the vibe, for example. **tim**: Makes sense. For me it was more that people who I didn't want to engage with anymore still engaged with me after I had muted them, and I thought it was somewhat a lack of imagination that we can't have crypto native blocking. One would think that my timeline on Warpcast is so owned by me that I can completely moderate it to my liking, no? **naomiii.eth**: Maybe this is to make people who get too annoyed build their own client. **tim**: Tear Driven development. Raise 200M but don‘t spend it to develop the ecosystem. Put it in Mercury and press people harder. They should stop whining. Life isn‘t fair Gotta love Ran **macbudkowski.eth**: i'm happy about this update because i will finally be able to read nassim taleb's tweets again :)
