A Dangerous New Home for Online Extremism
AI summary of the linked articleExtremists could use Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), blockchain-based entities governed without central leadership, to build self-governed digital structures, and the author argues that policymakers have largely ignored this risk. The article notes that over 10,000 DAOs already manage billions of dollars and count millions of participants, most of them innocent in tone, though the Redacted Club DAO uses alt-right codes and conspiracy references. It warns that extremists could use DAOs for fundraising, plotting radicalization campaigns or attacks, and election interference while evading government regulation. Technology expert Carl Miller, who has long warned of DAO misuse, said that DAOs behave like companies but are not registered as legal entities, and only Wyoming, Vermont, and Tennessee have passed laws recognizing them. |

2 comments timSubmitter Wtf? Why did this jurno smoke before writing this post? A lot of the negative claims here are entirely unfounded: If you believe that the deep state or the “global Jewish elites” control everything from governments and Big Tech to the global banking system, DAOs offer an appealing alternative. wat? Aren‘t most DAOs just either glorified Discords or a digitized bureaucracy of a 3/7 multisig for a regularly incorporated company? I've had my fair share of DAO-ing. My experience a DAO is a group pooling labour and/or funds aligning around a common goal. Actually like most orgs and companies. Difference is through blockchain tech you can do certain mostly financial stuff or voting more transparently, or do away with the treasurer. Anyway as it is with humans they group for all kinds of reasons. But if you're planning some evil goal together, starting a DAO might be ill advise, since the aforementioned transparency is what makes blockchain tech so interesting to align online in new ways. It's the same myth that Bitcoin is supposed to be untraceable. So in case you're planning for evil please use good old cash. Maybe Tether on TRON that might be of interest for folks with bad intentions. (By mouth of the UN, they say it's widely used for laundering.) And also the argument goes, with uranium you make energy, but also a nuclear bomb. So personally would say this Wired article is a lot of FUD, playing on the sentiments around crypto, in the hope to get some eyes on their website. (What Kiwi is actually providing right now 😅.) |
