Age Verification in the US
Age verification in the US by mishaderidder.eth13093 🥝 • 2y • 0 views • 0 clicks
AI summary of the linked articlePornhub says it has blocked access for users in 25 US states that have passed age verification laws, and it argues that such laws are ineffective and put privacy at risk. The company states that Louisiana's 2023 law led to an approximately 80% drop in traffic there, which it says displaced viewers to pirate and non-compliant sites without Trust and Safety measures. Pornhub instead advocates device-based age verification, in which users verify their age once through their operating system rather than on each adult site.
As of today Рогпhub is blocked in almost all of the U.S. South. The war on porn is real. And it probably won’t stop at Pornhub and porn. In the context of these laws, age verification requires users to prove that they are 18+ to view adult content. There are multiple ways that a user can prove their age, but any effective method requires them to submit some form of personally identifiable information (“PII”), like a driver's license. By assigning this responsibility to the platform(s) visited by a user, this means submitting private information many times to adult sites all over the internet, while normalizing disclosure of PII across the internet. This is not a privacy-by-design approach. Sounds to me more like a war on privacy... Since porn historically has been open to innovation, maybe it's time to finally have a broad zk-proofs application
