Brian Armstrong on memecoins
AI summary of the linked articleBrian Armstrong argues that memecoins, though often silly, offensive, or fraudulent today, should be approached with an open mind because new technologies often start as toys before evolving into something more powerful. He says memecoins are a canary in the coal mine signaling that everything will eventually be tokenized and brought onchain. Coinbase's approach is to let customers choose legal tokens for themselves while removing outright scams and providing useful information such as reviews or community notes. Armstrong also states that insider trading in some memecoins is illegal and carries prison time.

Oh wow really surprising take. You're telling me the CEO of the biggest CEX and L2 says that we should "moderate on memecoins" but that "they've always been part of the space" woooow, original take from a guy that makes money off of memecoin trading. Why are we platforming here again? This was the most interesting line to me as someone who has a direct line to the current administration. This would scare me if I were one of the coordinated riggers or KOLs. “Some memecoins have clearly gone too far lately, to the extent people are insider trading. This is illegal, and people should understand that you will go to prison for this”
