Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, is reportedly in informal talks to be sold to either Coinbase or Ripple, according to a Fortune report, while it still moves forward with its IPO plans. Circle filed for an IPO in April, and sources told Fortune the firm is seeking at least $5 billion, the value of the proposed offering. One source said Circle "would sell in a heartbeat" if Coinbase wanted to buy it, while another said "things change week by week." Ripple had earlier made an acquisition offer that was rejected.

talking about centralisation, that would be interesting case if coinbase would acquire circle. not your keys, not your coins. just saying ;)

Iβ€˜m anyways confused. Wasnβ€˜t Circle a spin out of Coinbase anyways?
avatar
they’re independent founded, but think they partnered at some point on usdc governance.

Mhh wasn't Balaji and Jacob the first people who launched USDC internally? When they worked at Coinbase?
avatar
no, USDC was launched by Circle founded by Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville in 2013. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_(company)

Yes, it was a spin-off and Coinbase had (has?) some stake in the company.

It'd be interesting if Coinbase bought Circle because I imagine other industry players that are worried about CB dominance would be less prone to adopt USDC. Especially in the world of so many stablecoins to choose from.

haha proof it! i can't find anywhere that Circle was a Coinbase spin-off. but maybe iykyk ;) it seems it is distinct independent founded companies.

Circle and Coinbase have been connected on USDC since Coinbase has been particpating in governance through a join venture since 2018.

yes that’s convincing ! thanks

let's not forget that ripple is also putting their hat on the ring for this buyout
Out of the two I'd prefer coinbase, but this is why I think decentralized stablecoins are the future
