Meta and X are going rogue. Here is what Europe should do now.

Europe should keep enforcing the DSA against large platforms and invest in open digital alternatives to reduce dependence on Big Tech. The European Commission has preliminary evidence that X could breach the DSA, while Meta's revised hateful conduct policy allows hate speech against selected groups, including on migration, gender identity and sexual orientation. Measures include a larger version of the Next Generation Internet programme funding open software, an open search index, an open browser engine and Fediverse projects such as Mastodon and PeerTube.
