AI summary of the linked articleThe author argues that decentralized social networks such as the Fediverse and Bluesky are the only viable path for online conversation, and that corporately owned platforms have been discredited. The piece covers two January 13, 2025 initiatives: Mastodon and Bluesky's "Free Our Feeds" effort, both seeking donations toward fundraising targets. It argues that Bluesky is not truly decentralized, since its ATProto implementation is currently the only one and would shut down if its operator failed, so the Free Our Feeds plan to fund an alternative ATProto Relay is welcomed. It also argues that ActivityPub servers are cheap to run, making the Fediverse the author's preferred option.

What is hard? · I’ll tell you what’s hard: Raising money for a good cause, when that good cause is full of abstractions about openness and the town square and so on. Which implies you’re not intending that the people providing the money will make money. So let’s wish both these efforts good luck. They’ll need it. This is expressing it VERY charitably. The "Free our feeds" website sub-titles: "Save Social Media From Billionaire Capture" [1]. Yet you can find countless sources which confirm that Bluesky has onboarded into the venture capital stair case of having to raise ever more money to eventually squeeze the juice from its users/advertisers. And where the fuck does the Bluesky manifest team think this VC money comes from? WHAT IF IT COMES FROM... BILLIONAIRES??? It's such a thankless position to be the founder of a bootstrapped, independent media company when there are clearly LARPs out there just copying and running with one of your core tenets, without providing receipts. It also disgusts me how uninformed or naive retail is if they believe this. Maybe they just deserve to be burned again and again. They'll never learn! Yes, I was actually thinking the same thing. Must admit I check Mastodon more often than Bsky … that is not that often ;) But Mastodon just also feels and vibes better. Anyway it’s not plain dull. Not only saying this bc before I checked into Warpcast I used to run a Mastodon instance on a Raspberry Pi - which is actually super easy. You could also easily cloud host your instance for minimal costs. The fun is at the prehistoric elephants 🦣 just saying.
