Rethinking NFT marketplaces

AI summary of the linked article

The author argues that an NFT marketplace built in 2025 should lead with engaging activities and treat buying and selling as secondary, so it could appeal beyond crypto users and avoid competing directly with OpenSea and Magic Eden. The proposed thought experiment, called Tableau as a placeholder name, would combine a "Curations" product, similar to Pinterest boards with Figma-style editing and referral splits on NFT purchases, with a "Badges" feature for commemorating achievements and a "Profiles" section tying them together. The author says the idea is not revolutionary but states they would use it for notes, moodboards, and wishlists.

Interesting ideas. Reading this article I can’t help thinking if I would build a new NFT marketplace I would do it other way around. Instead of introducing more noise, like the article proposes, I would simplify. There are only a few good projects launching each month, maybe even less. Currently those projects are coming on my radar organically. I would thus instead built a community curated marketplace for only the very best that would work like a filter to keep out the noise. And then a very clean basic website focused on just to trade, and more importantly to show the art in the best way possible, to examine to goods. Maybe some basic filters on tech, like fully onchain or dynamic, stuff like that, so you know what you’re buying. Maybe you’d combine with a monthly newsletter w/ interviews etc. Obviously trading mechanics should be fully decentralized w/ small fee for the community curation and marketplace & of course artist royalties. You could also built some mechanism to reward loyalty to the marketplace, like maybe after a certain amount of trades you become a curator yourself. Maybe a fruity name, like 🍌 Banana Market. Smth like that ;) .. if someone builds I’ll come.
