EFF's guide helps users decide how to handle age verification mandates, which it opposes but notes are already in effect across the web. It recommends submitting the least data possible and asking who can access, retain, audit and see each verification method. The guide notes that facial age estimation works less well for people of color, trans and nonbinary people, and people with disabilities. It cites Discord's breach, which exposed nearly 70,000 photos of users' ID documents, and says Incode holds ID images forever by default for TikTok. For Meta, it says Meta holds uploaded IDs for 30 days before deletion.
