This also happens in other areas, it's the debate of collaboration (& standardisation) vs competition: there are tradeoffs in both, but in the gold rush the latter wins. This is highlighted by Scott Alexander's "meditations on moloch" and solving that would require great efforts as well as champions. Let's be more vocal and proactive about those issues
