That sounds like such a bad asset to invest in as a private company 😅

It might sound like that, but only because the cables are experiencing their first attack wave. I expect to see more development in security and failsafes. The satellite constellations only *look* safer -- until the first one will come down.

Agreed, I‘d say the satellites are even more exposed as no country will manage to claim jurisdiction there, whereas in international waters there can at least be state-powered drama of who‘s territory was trespassed

Pretty off topic but fun. I have been obsessing a bit about the idea of a citizens wireless mesh network. Right now Meshtastic seems to have the most traction (helium you bastard why did you fail to deliver). It's wildly impractical with LoRa needing line of site. But still I romanticize the idea that we put some relays on the tv-Tower and then even without any corporate Internet you could message people. Particularly because there are sooooo many places where you have line of sight to the Berlin TV tower.

In Berlin there is also Freifunk btw, which to my knowledge has been running for several years and doesn‘t use a token lol

There's also a Portuguese project called Uplink (https://www.uplink.xyz/). I once spoke with their founder, and they claimed to have some solid tech behind the network but seems like they're still in the pre-launch
