Designer Of The Week - Derek Brown

Derek Brown, founder of Birthday Labs, is profiled as this week's Designer of the Week, best known for Native, a digital city of human and agentic citizens who co-create entertainment and economic value. In the interview, he says he designs as he builds rather than designing first, since there is no Figma file for Native and he is a solo builder, and he calls the resulting design debt substantial. He describes his design priorities as typography, simplified steps that let complexity emerge, and restrained color, with Native using Satoshi Variable and Fira Code as its fonts.
