When I was in college (I think in 2012 or 2013), I wrote an essay about AI. My thesis was that the only consciousness we know of is the product of evolution, so we should recreate the same environment for AI. For example, we could make machines compete for limited resources—like humans—and mutate randomly 1000s times per day, so they could speedrun evolution and one day, we might make them conscious. This is def a more degen application of this idea but it'd be interesting to see how it plays out.
