Meet ZachXBT, the Masked Vigilante Tracking Down Billions in Crypto Scams

ZachXBT, an anonymous crypto investigator who works under that online handle, traced a $243 million bitcoin theft that WIRED describes as perhaps the biggest known crypto heist ever to target an individual. The funds were partly traced to the defunct Genesis exchange, and two alleged hackers, Malone Lam and Jeandiel Serrano, were identified and later arrested and charged. By his own count, his investigations have helped recover around $210 million in criminal crypto proceeds, and he has been funded mainly by crypto donations totaling about $1.3 million since 2021.
