New Media IRL: "New Release" by Yacht

YACHT, a Los Angeles trio, has released New Release, a physical-first album package sold exclusively on Metalabel that combines vinyl, a password-protected zip file, an audio commentary and other digital material unlocked by a physical key in the vinyl package. Yesterday the first 100 editions sold out in 90 minutes, and a "Second Wave" of 200 more editions has since been added. Vocalist Claire L. Evans and Jona discuss in a Metalabel interview the idea of a "reverse preorder," which lets fans live with the physical record before the digital release, and the band's view that everyday life is increasingly turned into products.
