My ex gf used to be on TikTok a lot and she messaged me today with some alpha about this new app. She downloaded it and said that Americans watch videos of Chinese people buying cheap fruits and vegetables and complain that they can't have it in the US haha. It's as if in the 70s they watched the Soviet Union's national TV and got jealous of Russians living in Vladivostok.

I feel a bit left out as European, damn we should have a TikTok ban too lol. Maybe I’ll ask my daughter to install, her phone is crapped out anyway. Curious now.

Our TikTok ban at home will be X, wait for it. At least when they start to censor social media there‘s a real good reason for this architecture to exist I guess. And glad I‘ve built it before it was illegal to build social media. We ARE entering dark times indeed. Sad

Some countries might try banning X, but it might be hard to do it an EU-wide thing. Countries closer to the Russian border (like Poland and CEE in general) don't want to make Americans angry, and they'd for sure pressure us to oppose these legislations.

Personally not for banning any social media. In Netherlands all the parties are active on X, especially the ones in power. Only Volt has gone off X two weeks ago. So not expecting a ban here any time soon. More probable might be a ban on the level of the Union, but I think it would be hard to find consensus among the member states. I guess Italy for example would never agree. But there is going to be a push for it I guess.

What I think is important to start to take social and economic online life seriously: start educating children as soon as they enter primary school about digital etiquette, what internet is, how to find and interpret knowledge, digital self defense, to use and benefit from artificial intelligence and empower them in online finance.

Now parents use the iPad as a digital nanny and walk away (or are ignorant themselves of course). Worse case scenario is that they spy on their kids through ‘find my’ and all kinds of parental controls. But parental controls (banning stuff) won’t educate anyone, it’s just creating a panopticon and normalizing surveillance. Also a lot of schools have no idea what to do with internet and education. There’s a lot to gain there.
