Rediscovering the Small Web

Parimal Satyal argues that a smaller, personal web made by regular people for their hobbies still exists alongside the commercial sites that dominate traffic, and is worth seeking out. He describes rebuilding his own roughly 10-page site in plain HTML and CSS, without content management systems or templates, after his older Node.js setup began throwing errors. He traces this web's history through free hosts such as Geocities, which he calls among the biggest catalysts to democratising the web, and through directories like DMOZ.
