This essay argues that new media, from generative AI to recommendation algorithms, shows viewers what they want, measures their reactions, and reshapes itself to influence them, and it traces the techniques that exploit human perception to get there. It begins with the CIA's MKULTRA program, which Allen Dulles authorized three days after his April 10, 1953 "brain warfare" speech and which included at least 149 subprojects. One of these, Subproject 94, funded Woody Bledsoe's remote-control animal experiments from 1959 until the CIA halted it in 1962.
