The Risks of Using Telegram for Crypto Users

Telegram updated its FAQ to clarify how users report illegal content, following the arrest of founder Pavel Durov in Paris last month, but Telegram declined to say what happens after content is flagged. Electronic Frontier Foundation Director of Cybersecurity Eva Galperin says crypto users often overestimate Telegram's security, since only private chats in "Secret Chat" mode are end-to-end encrypted, and that is not the default setting. Johns Hopkins cryptographer Matthew Green has questioned Telegram's MTProto 2.0 protocol, which he says has not been extensively peer-reviewed. Galperin recommends that users who want private communications avoid Telegram and use Signal instead.
