Two Sundance 2024 documentaries, Eternal You and Love Machina, are criticized for failing to scrutinize artificial intelligence claims about digital afterlives and mind uploading. The review says Love Machina, which profiles Martine Rothblatt and her BINA48 chatbot, presents the project without skepticism and reads more like a recruitment video for the Terasem Movement. It says Eternal You surveys ventures such as Project December without questioning whether their bots can do what they claim. The review argues that both films distract from real issues such as labor, plagiarism and underpaid human workers behind AI tools.
