Y Google Cloud?
AI summary of the linked articleThe author argues that Google should shift resources away from its Cloud business toward consumer products, since Cloud's opportunity cost is high relative to its returns. Cited figures include Google Cloud consuming about 30% of Google's headcount while generating 11% of revenue and 1% of profits, with a margin of 11% versus 40% for the core advertising, services and devices business. The article also says Cloud is largely undifferentiated, competing mainly on customer support, sales and marketing, and that Google's subscriptions, platforms and devices division grew 23%, comparable to Cloud's growth rate. |

1 comment I think the main reason is that Cloud is Google's AI play. They want to stay independent from other companies' computing power and - since they build their own hardware - they sell their cloud to use customers funds to subsidize R&D. Btw it's surprising how much their Search business grows given the deteriorating quality. |
