I feel like this cannot exist if all people pursue social networks as a branding status game and if they expect that things they enjoy are just served to them. I feel like this is a very classic 2015-2025 theme. We're so used to ZIRP and venture capital that we're outright confused or upset if something that we want doesn't exist yet. And our inner child kinda refuses to accept that there is maybe some work to do to get there. Sorry I'm a little drunk! Anyways, having posted on HN myself and commented there, I think it is very different in terms of the person it attracts and the mindset from Twitter. On reddit and HN you can clearly see this: identity is very small and insignificant. You never visit profiles and any time, on HN, you could be chatting with someone super important. Unless you're really on a roll, you really don't post there to build an identity/brand. I've seen this happen on HN, but they usually start to surpress self promotion after a while. You post on HN because you enjoy engaging with the hivemind. And for the love of finding good arguments and being well informed. You are not building a "brand" like Elon does on HN. Or reddit. That just isn't happening. I think many people on Farcaster in particular approach social networks in a disgusting "what can I gain here" way (sorry ... not sorry). I'd say I have 25 years of online forum experience. I've had accounts on fringe bulletin boards with thousands of comments and threads. And I frankly have never seen anyone been driven by the "what can I get out of this here." When communities formed that I was part of, it was ALWAYS for a shared purpose and for the shared understanding and company. I mean I keep preaching to the choir but if you want HN for crypto, you literally just have to pause the part in your brain that constantly wants to profit/attention-max your brand/identity. And then you and your friends y'all have to actively fill up the HN of crypto that already exists (Kiwi). To kick start the machine it'd take a few weeks, yes, and there's a very high risk that "your brand and distribution" will suffer. But see it like this: The selfish economic actor theory of Daniel Romero, "everyone just tries to profit-max on social media" has not worked either. You can check his stats. So we might as well try it by altruistically sharing what we're interested in. I bet this would work. Me, Misha, Mac and others have tried it. But we are not enough and it's hard to keep this going for months. | |
