One funny lesson from seeing these old Google, Amazon & Facebook websites is that they used to be much more descriptive - they clearly explained what their products did. These Big Tech companies didn't ditch it until they became popular enough to safely assume most people who land on their website know what their product is about. When I worked as a marketing consultant, the most common startups mistake was trying to communicate like a mature, well-recognized tech product. But if you are a young startup which hasn't been covered by dozens of journalists, hundreds of bloggers and thousands of users doing word of mouth, you probably should keep educating the users who land on your website.
