>>> The difference is that Banks tricks the reader into, in effect, sympathizing with the Borg. My introduction to Banks was "The Player of Games" (1988!), which provided me with a positive attitude towards drones and related tech, so I never made that Borg switch. But yeah, if it helps. Somewhere in the book Banks also introduces "Marain", the Culture's language, as transcending genders, races and even boundaries to artificial minds. Having experienced the recent language wars, I'm looking forward to it.

I feel like I was exposed to this idea through Antonio Garcia‘s Chaosmonkeys and I have, ever since, been inspired by the idea. Mostly in dystopic ways. I, for example, think there is something about the Cybertruck solving people‘s need for safety in mismanaged western inner cities, when, in fact, this is actually the task of politics or culture [1]. This already plays along the crime/drone axis. IMO politics has to step up their accountability. Otherwise liberals must not complain about Cybertrucks, as the problem is solved without their input! - 1: https://x.com/timdaub/status/1810961123656503297
