Beyond the presidential memecoin, four things to watch

Crypto's long-term progress will depend on four issues beyond the presidential memecoin: self-custody, consumer protection, bitcoin mining policy and bitcoin reserves. President-elect Donald Trump launched a Solana-based memecoin late Friday, and according to CoinGecko data it had a market capitalization above $5 billion by 2:30 p.m. Saturday and more than $11 billion in trading volume. Self-custody lets people control their assets without an intermediary, and consumer protections should avoid both over-regulation and under-regulation, with the FTX collapse cited as the failure to avoid.
