Commerce protocol x402 system joins Linux Foundation

Coinbase's x402 payment protocol is moving toward becoming open, standardized infrastructure under the Linux Foundation, with an initial governing body called the x402 Foundation that includes Cloudflare and Stripe. The protocol is designed for AI agent payments of fractions of a cent at high frequency, which the article says traditional credit card networks struggle to handle. Coinbase said in a press release that Adyen, Amazon Web Services, American Express, Google, Mastercard, Microsoft, Shopify and Visa have also expressed initial intent and support. Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin said the foundation will create an open, community-governed home for developing these capabilities.
