Our approach to age prediction

OpenAI is rolling out age prediction on ChatGPT consumer plans to estimate whether an account likely belongs to someone under 18, so that teen safeguards can be applied. The model uses behavioral and account-level signals, including how long an account has existed, typical times of day when someone is active, usage patterns over time, and a user's stated age. When the model flags an account as likely under 18, ChatGPT limits content such as graphic violence, viral challenges, sexual or romantic role play, and depictions of self-harm. Users wrongly placed in the under-18 experience can restore full access with a selfie through Persona, and age prediction began rolling out in the EU on August 25, 2026, with the EU rollout set for the coming weeks.
