Geth v1.14.0 (Asteria) is a major release with breaking changes, most notably switching the default state trie representation from hash mode to path mode for new full nodes. The main advantage of path mode is built-in, online historical state pruning, while existing databases keep their current format and archive nodes still run in hash mode until path archive support lands. The release also drops support for pre-merge networks, removes Clique signing and automatic pending block construction, and requires Go v1.22 or later for building.
