Geth v1.16.0 introduces a new experimental archive node implementation that works with path-based state storage and stores all historical states. Compared with the legacy hash-based archive mode, which exceeded 20TB when syncing mainnet and required a high-speed SSD, the full mainnet state history under path-based storage is about 1.9TB, excluding the tx-by-hash and log indexes, and can be stored on a dedicated disk that need not be an SSD. The main drawback is that eth_getProof is not supported for historical blocks, as path-based storage serves state proofs only for the latest 128 blocks. The release also merges the state snapshot and trie database layer trees into a single implementation.
