Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher who had accused the company of violating U.S. copyright law, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26, 2024. The San Francisco Police Department and the Chief Medical Examiner concluded the death was a suicide, and an autopsy report released February 14, 2025 described a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. Balaji's parents disputed that finding, saying a second autopsy they commissioned showed evidence of homicide, though they did not provide a copy of it.
