There's definitely some truth to that. For a long time, I was worried that we hadn't followed the classic "product is free, but you have to be on a cool kids allowlist" playbook. But... I have been on a few allowlists. In almost all cases, I opened the product because I felt "chosen," played around, and closed it. The only product where I stayed is Farcaster. On Kiwi, we have chosen a different path. Since Day 1, you had to mint a Kiwi Pass to submit and upvote links, but everyone could read the content. Then, we experimented with a subtle paywall, and now our paywall is fully developed, as you can't open the app without a Pass. Does it limit Kiwi's reach? Probably yes. But this paywall also serves as a filter for the people who are most excited about our product, and these are the people we want to serve in the startup's early days. | |
